Climbing Kebnekaise: August expands to Sweden

August Associates is expanding to Sweden and opening an office in Stockholm in April 2026. The move strengthens the firm’s ability to provide clients with hands-on support across the Nordics – with the same tailored, impact-focused approach that has defined August throughout its 25-year history. The firm believes Nordic clients deserve high-quality consulting that builds on senior teams, agile cooperation, and an honest, hands-on approach.

“Sweden is a natural next step for us,” says Managing Partner Mikko Pulkkinen. “Our strategy is to be the trusted partner for companies and investors in their most important strategic and transformation initiatives. Establishing a presence in Sweden allows us to support our clients more effectively across the Nordics.”

International expansion has been revisited in August’s strategy work over the years, typically as one of several longer-term options. In the latest strategy cycle, Sweden was selected as one of the scenarios to explore further.

“Sweden is an attractive direction both from a business perspective and in terms of renewing the firm. Building a proudly different alternative to these two markets is a highly meaningful mission for all of us,” says Partner Tomi Ere.

Internally, the initiative was named Kebnekaise, after Sweden’s highest mountain. “We saw this as a challenging peak to climb, but still very much a doable one – perfect fit to our Brave the Future mindset,” Ere says.

From early on, August chose to establish its presence in Sweden organically. Rather than acquiring a business, the plan is to build a local team and grow it over time. Among the candidates identified, Fredrik Gustafsson stood out. His profile combines extensive consulting experience with strong client exposure, particularly within private equity firms and their portfolio companies, a core segment for August in Sweden. Equally important was his perspective on the kind of firm he wanted to help build.

“It was clear from the first meeting that there was an exceptional fit. In addition to his experience, Fredrik’s values and ways of working align naturally with August – to the extent that it felt like he had been part of the team for years,” Ere says.

For Gustafsson, the appeal is both professional and personal. “There are very few outstanding Nordic boutique consulting firms. I really appreciate the August model: high-quality consulting through hands-on senior teams working side by side with clients in a Nordic and humane way. I’m very excited to bring that to Sweden.”

Sweden is a very mature market, with clients accustomed to working with external advisors. “There’s a clear demand for an agile, strategy-oriented consulting partner positioned between the large global consulting firms and niche boutiques,” Gustafsson continues.

The expansion also reflects how August approaches its own development. ”August has spent 25 years building its position in Finland,” Pulkkinen concludes. “Now we are taking the next step in our development. Expanding into a new market brings new energy and pushes us to evolve.”
